Postgame Takes

Tomlin on Dwayne, Devin and Najee

In command: Quarterback Dwayne Haskins had a strong outing in the Steelers 24-16 win over the Eagles, completing 16 of 22 passes for 161 yards, a touchdown and a 108.3 quarterback rating.

"I thought he was in command tonight," said Coach Mike Tomlin. "He did a great job of communicating with people, going through progressions. He had a third down play, third-and-eight, and I saw him go through three or four reads and throw the ball over the middle of the field and convert for us. That was just a snapshot of the type of night he had tonight. I thought he was very much in command of his play."

Tomlin said like with many other players he needs to see more of Haskins, but what he brought on the field and with his smarts tonight was big.

"It's the above the neck things that define that position, and quite frankly many others when you start talking about playing well," said Tomlin.

He's back: Linebacker Devin Bush saw his first action of the 2021 preseason against the Eagles, the first playing time he has seen since his season-ending knee injury in 2020. Bush finished the night with two tackles.

"He got his feet wet, so that's a great start," said Tomlin. "We'll continue to push forward from there. Today was a big day from that perspective. I don't want to make more out of it than what it is. Now we just go on."

Not surprised: The stats might not jump out on paper, two carries for 10 yards, but first round pick Najee Harris once again proved he can make something out of nothing, a characteristic he has shown in practice, early in the preseason, and even in college.

"You guys have seen that in practice settings, those of you that watch us in practice," said Tomlin. "I don't think any of us are surprised by what we are seeing in game. By the same token it's what he displayed on college tape and that is one of the reasons why we really coveted him in the draft. He is as good as advertised in that area."
