The Steelers made several roster moves on Saturday, including elevating running back Trey Sermon from the practice squad to the Active/Inactive Roster for Sunday's game against the New England Patriots at Gillette Stadium. He will revert back to the practice squad after the game.
The team also placed offensive lineman Max Scharping on the Reserve/Injured List with a knee injury.
Sermon was signed following a tryout during the Steelers rookie minicamp this year, but brought experience with him.
Sermon has appeared in 42 games, starting five, over four seasons. He carried the ball 134 times for 505 yards and three touchdowns. He spent the last two years with the Indianapolis Colts, appearing in 31 games, with three starts. He had 91 carries for 319 yards and two touchdowns.
He spent the 2022 season with the Philadelphia Eagles and 2021 with the San Francisco 49ers.
Scharping was signed to a one-year contract in the offseason, after he originally joined the team during the 2024 season and appeared in two games.
Scharping, who is in his seventh NFL season, has appeared in 81 games, starting 33 of them.
He was drafted by the Houston Texans in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft, the 55th overall selection. He spent three seasons with the Texans, appearing in 48 games, starting 33 of them at both left guard and right guard.
Scharping was acquired via waivers by the Cincinnati Bengals in 2022, playing in 14 games that season, without any regular season starts. He started all three postseason games at right guard after an injury to Alex Cappa. In 2023 he appeared in 17 games for the Bengals, mainly on special teams.
He played college football at Northern Illinois University where he started all 53 games of his career, seeing action at both guard and tackle. He has played in 67 games (33 starts) in his five-year NFL career with the Texans (2019-2021), Bengals (2023), Commanders (2024), and the Steelers (2024).
