The Steelers signed safety Chuck Clark and offensive guard Max Sharping and placed quarterback Will Howard and cornerback Donte Kent on the Reserve/Injured List.
Clark, who is in his ninth season in the NFL, signed with the Steelers during training camp. He spent his first six seasons with the Baltimore Ravens and the last two with the New York Jets.
He has appeared in 108 career games, starting 75 of them, and has recorded 429 tackles, 260 of them solo stops, nine tackles for a loss, and five interceptions, including one returned for a touchdown. He also has 34 passes defensed, six forced fumbles and five fumble recoveries.
Clark, who entered the NFL as a sixth-round pick of the Ravens, appeared in 12 games in 2024, starting all of them. He had 69 tackles, 38 of them solo stops, and two passes defensed. Clark played college football at Virginia Tech where he finished with 292 tackles, including 195 of them in his final two seasons.
The Steelers signed Scharping to a one-year contract in the offseason, after he originally joined the team during the 2024 season and appeared in two games. Scharping, who is entering his seventh NFL season, has appeared he 81 games, starting 33 of them.
He was drafted by the Houston Texans in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft, the 55th overall selection. He spent three seasons with the Texans, appearing in 48 games, starting 33 of them at both left guard and right guard.
Scharping was acquired via waivers by the Cincinnati Bengals in 2022, playing in 14 games that season, without any regular season starts. He started all three postseason games. In 2023 he appeared in 17 games for the Bengals, mainly on special teams. He played college football at Northern Illinois University where he started all 53 games of his career, seeing action at both guard and tackle. Has played in 67 games (33 starts) in his five-year NFL career with the Texans (2019-2021), Bengals (2023), Commanders (2024), and the Steelers (2024).
Howard, who played at Ohio State, was drafted by the Steelers in the sixth round of the 2025 NFL Draft with the 185th overall pick. He suffered a hand injury during training camp, forcing him to miss the preseason.
Howard spent one season playing for the Buckeyes after starting his college career at Kansas State. He appeared in a total of 50 games in his college career, completing 767 of 1,202 passes, 63.8%, for 9,796 yards, 83 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.
Howard started all 16 games for the Buckeyes, leading them to a school record 14 wins and the College Football Playoff National Championship. He completed 309 of 423 passes for 4,010 yards and 35 touchdowns. His completion percentage was a career and school record, also setting an Ohio State record with eight games with at least an 80% completion percentage.
Among the honors Howard won in 2024 were the Most Valuable Player in the win over Texas in the Cotton Bowl and the win over Notre Dame in the CFP National Championship.
Howard began his college career in 2020 at Kansas State and in four seasons appeared in 34 games. He completed 458 of 779 passes for 5,786 yards and 48 touchdowns.
Kent was selected in the seventh round of the 2025 NFL Draft, the 229th overall pick.
Kent appeared in 53 games for Central Michigan, starting 48, and finished with 235 career tackles, 171 of them solo stops. He had 47 passes defensed, two interceptions, two forced fumbles, a fumble recovery, four and a half tackles for a loss, and one and a half sacks.
He also returned 16 punts for 217 yards, including a long of 68 yards, and one touchdown, all during the 2024 season. Kent was named All-Mid-American Conference three times, including first team in 2022 and second team in 2023 and 2024.
