Derrick Harmon's phone call from the Steelers welcoming him to the team after they had selected him in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft was a bittersweet moment for the young defensive lineman.
On one hand, it was a testament to all the hard work he had put in to reshape his body and become a better football player. On the other hand, the person who had been the driving force for him over the course of his 21 years wasn't there to celebrate the moment with him.
His mother, Tiffany Saine, was at a nearby hospital on life support, continuing her battle with longtime health issues that had plagued her since her son's freshman year at Michigan State.
Saine suffered a stroke that year that left her paralyzed on the left side of her body and went through multiple surgeries over the years in an effort to extend her life. Soon after receiving the call from the Steelers, Harmon hustled to the hospital to let his mother know their dreams had been fulfilled.
Tiffany Saine died that night.
A child losing their mother is a traumatic experience for anyone, regardless of age. But the relationship of Saine and Harmon is a bond that can never be broken. Her inner strength and resilience are embedded in him.
In fact, everything Harmon is today is a direct result of his upbringing at the hands of his mother and everything she did for him.
Saine was and remains Harmon's inspiration. With Mothers Day now come and gone – Harmon's first without his mother – it's easy to reflect on what Tiffany Saine meant.
"Man, how resilient she was," Harmon said of what his mother taught him. "Just growing up, from my standpoint, of my situation, I grew up with her having probably seven, eight brain surgeries. And after all those brain surgeries, she did not give up. She still took me to practice, still went to work. And I always, always got in the back of my head, from the beginning of my college career, was, why can I keep going if I'm tired, I'm injured, whatever it is, why can I keep going. If she can get up and she can keep going after brain surgery. So, just her resilience, and hard work."
That was evident to those around Harmon from a young age.
John Callahan was the football coach at Loyola High School, a small, private Catholic school for boys in Detroit, near where Harmon grew up. He coached Harmon his first two seasons at the tiny school, which boasts about 40 boys per class, and got to know Harmon and his mother quickly.
"When he came in, you could tell the kid was special by not just his efforts on the football field," said Callahan of Harmon, who is known as DJ to his friends and family. "And to be honest with you, to get to know Derek, you need to understand his mom and the relationship that he had with her, what a special lady she was, having the situation with her surgeries and everything else going on. There wasn't a thing that she missed regarding Derek. I think she spent more time in my office than some of my assistant coaches, not just checking up on him, but wanting to know how he was doing, what we could do to make them better, and not just on the football field, but in the classroom.
"I mean, I think she knew the name of his girlfriends I think before he knew it. She was definitely on top of it. And again, just an extremely special woman. He loved her to death. For a kid that age to show the emotion that he did with her and not be embarrassed, most kids are kind of like, 'Ma, get away, get away.'
But she would be right in there with him. And he was totally accepting. So that part of them, you would never, never think that that would be the same guy you see on Saturday afternoon, or, for me, Friday night playing football. She was, like I said, just a special person."
Harmon became an immediate starter for the Bulldogs as a freshman - on the offensive line. In his sophomore year, he began playing on the defensive line, as well.
Even though Loyola is a tiny school, playing in Michigan's smallest classification, the Bulldogs played a schedule that included much larger schools. They didn't back down from anyone, and neither did Harmon.
"Loyola is a small Jesuit boys school. We played the biggest schools," Callahan said. "We played anybody, and he went and played the biggest school, Division one, two, it didn't matter, and pretty much beat them all. But, you know, obviously he was a large part of it, so his competition wasn't at a lower level, or where people may think. We played the best in the state, and he went up against the best even as a freshman and sophomore. He never backed down. He was always taking care of business."
Just like his mother taught him.
Then again, because of his size, Harmon grew up playing against older competition. A large child, Harmon was always forced to play one or even two years above his age level when he began playing football at the age of 5 because he was so much bigger than his peers.
Kevin Rogers was the head coach at Loyola in Harmon's senior season. But he had seen the youngster while watching youth football games in the area.
Harmon stood out in a crowd, even then.
"He was always bigger than most, definitely, playing youth football," said Rogers. "You kind of had an eye on them, watching him play growing up. So, I definitely knew about him. I didn't really have that type of relationship that I have now with him, but definitely I saw him playing and kind of saw him grow and then develop."
Thing was, Harmon was a big kid. But he also was carrying extra weight.
"When he came in, he had a little, little fat he had to get rid of, but obviously he started working on it and took care of that part," Callahan said.
How did he take off the extra weight?
"Hard work," Harmon said. "I just worked really hard."
And his athleticism started to show.
In his junior year, he earned honorable mention all-star recognition on defense and also garnered his first college offer, that coming from Central Michigan.
But recruiting was difficult going into his senior season. Callahan had left after Harmon's sophomore season, and after a year, Rogers was a late hire just prior to the start of the season. Then, COVID lockdowns hit.
"I always sum it up this way, when I got the job, let's say it was a Monday," Rogers said. "I had a team meeting on Wednesday, and COVID hit on Friday."
Needless to say, that made life difficult for a first-time head coach.
Fortunately for Rogers, he had Harmon.
"I literally had to build relationships and get to know my team through Zoom and text messages and phone calls," Rogers said. "And he was the leading catalyst to that. He would make sure everybody was on all the Zooms. He would schedule the Zoom. He scheduled Zoom workouts. He scheduled Zoom meetings to go over schematics. He was so tapped in, and you would have thought that he was a coach on the staff. It was my first year as a coach. He made that transition for me, so much easier. I was fortunate enough to end up winning Coach of the Year that year, but a big part goes to DJ and what he meant for our program, in terms of the leadership, the communication, things like that."
The Bulldogs went 9-3 that season, but because of travel restrictions, recruiting for Harmon was difficult.
And, given his mother's health struggles, he wanted to stay close to home.
He had offers from Alabama A&M, Alabama State, Austin Peay and Morgan State before his junior year. After that season, he got offers from Mississippi and Purdue.
But he held out hope that Michigan State, where former Loyola star Malik McDowell had played under Callahan, would offer him. The school is located just over an hour from his home and would offer Harmon the opportunity to stay closer to his mother.

"Super excited," Rogers said of Harmon when Michigan State's offer finally came in March of 2020. "I mean, ecstatic, you know, ready to take on the world. He came from a lot of hard work. Michigan State was really one of his schools that he was really looking at. And to have an opportunity to play Power Five football at that time, Power Five football, and be able to stay home and be close to his mom, you can't beat it."
After playing in four games as a true freshman, he took a redshirt season
The next season, he appeared in 12 games, starting five, and recorded 30 tackles, including three for a loss, and two sacks. As a redshirt sophomore, he had 40 tackles and 1.5 sacks.
But Mel Tucker, who had offered Harmon soon after becoming head coach at Michigan State, was fired by the school and Harmon had to reassess his future.
He sat down with his mother and discussed what would be best for him.
"Leaving and going to Oregon was probably the hardest decision I had to make," Harmon said in a pre-draft video on ESPN. "I sat down with my mom and she told me that every decision I had made to this point was for her. It was time to make a decision for myself."
Harmon made the decision to transfer to Oregon, over 2,000 miles away from Detroit.
"Obviously, he wanted to be close to his mom," Rogers said. "That's why he went to Michigan State. But that seemed to be a move that really kind of changed things for him, absolutely. And it was a tough decision. It took a lot of prayer, took a lot of soul searching, and my whole deal with him was, you know, don't leave Michigan State until you feel in your heart of heart, or you know in your heart of hearts, that you've done everything that you possibly could to be on the field, everything that the coaches are asking of you.
"I didn't want him to leave until he felt, or he knew, that he did everything that he possibly could to be the best version of himself."
Harmon was certainly that at Oregon.

He blossomed for the Ducks on one of the most talented defenses in college football. In 14 games, Harmon recorded 45 tackles, including 10.5 for a loss, 5 sacks, 2 forced fumbles, 2 fumble recoveries and three batted passes. He led all FBS interior pass rushers with 55 pressures, 12 more than the next closest player.
Oregon put Harmon in more advantageous pass-rush situations and he thrived in the Ducks' three-man front as opposed to the four-man front favored at Michigan State.
"I never played the (four-interior spot) in the three-down front. It was really a four-down, tight front at Michigan State," Harmon said. "Going all the way to Oregon, playing the 4i, sometimes the five or the six over the tight end, I really didn't do that much (at Michigan State), but it showed how versatile I can be and will be to the next level."
It certainly caught the eye of the Steelers, who looked at Harmon's over 6-foot-4 height and over 34-inch arms as a perfect fit as a defensive end in their 3-4 defense who is capable of playing inside on passing downs.
Equally as important, they viewed Harmon as a high-character, high-quality person.
"I just think he's been impressive at every step of the process for us. His tape was impressive," said Steelers general manager Omar Khan. "We had great visits with him in Indy. He came to Pittsburgh, and we had a great day with him. Just with each interaction, we all got more and more comfortable that he was our type of a guy."
Or, as both Khan and head coach Mike Tomlin said at the conclusion of the draft, he's got Steelers DNA.
"His intangible qualities are very attractive," Tomlin said. "He's a smart guy. He's a football guy. He's got natural leadership skills. The people at Oregon were really blown away by his ability to fit in and not only fit in but lead in a short period of time. He had a similar reputation at Michigan State, and so the tangible things are obvious, but we were equally as impressed with his intangible quality, his intelligence, his relationship with the game, his natural leadership qualities."
They're all attractive qualities, ones built from a very young age by his mother.
She was always there for him, not only nurturing him, but helping him grow and become a first-round draft pick in the NFL.
"If I can surround myself with a bunch of football players like that, I'd never lose a game," Callahan said. "Just special. I just can't speak enough about him.
"I'm just so happy that (the Steelers) got him and that, I think now that with the passing of his mom, he can really focus on himself, and I can only imagine he's going to get better. Yeah, absolutely."
