The Steelers made multiple roster moves on Tuesday, including signing tight end Kevin Rader to the active roster from the practice squad and activating tight end Vance McDonald from the Reserve/COVID-19 List. The team also placed tight end Zach Gentry on the Reserve/Injured List and signed linebacker/long snapper Christian Kuntz to the practice squad.
McDonald was placed on the Reserve/COVID-19 list on Nov. 10, the day after the Steelers win over the Dallas Cowboys. McDonald has nine receptions for 61 yards this season, a 6.8-yard average.
Rader, who played high school football at Pine-Richland in the Pittsburgh area, has been on the practice squad since the start of the 2020 season. He spent the majority of the 2019 season on the Steelers' practice squad. He originally signed a reserve/future contract with the Steelers early in the 2019 offseason. Rader was signed by the Green Bay Packers as an undrafted rookie free agent following the 2018 NFL Draft, spending training camp with the team. He played collegiately at Youngstown State where he had 44 receptions for 601 yards and four touchdowns.
Kuntz, a Pittsburgh native, is no stranger to the Steelers. He originally joined the team during the 2019 preseason but was released a few weeks later when the team cut down to the 53-man roster. He was also with the Steelers this offseason and during training camp. Kuntz also spent time with the Denver Broncos and Jacksonville Jaguars. He played at Chartiers Valley High School and collegiately at Duquesne University. He finished with a school record 30.5 sacks, winning two Northeast Conference Defensive Player of the Year awards and is the only player in school history to earn All-American honors three times.
Gentry injured his knee against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 11, only the second game he played in 2020. He had one reception in four games in 2019.
NOTE: Per agreed-upon NFL-NFLPA policy, clubs are not permitted to comment on a player's medical status other than referring to roster status. Being placed on the Reserve/COVID-19 list is for a player who either tests positive for COVID-19 or who has been in close contact with an infected person or persons.
