Sons of 2 HOFers among 6 players signed

The Steelers offseason roster continues to grow, as the team signed six players on Tuesday.

Among those signed are the sons of two members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, Akil Blount, son of Steelers Hall of Famer Mel Blount, and Mike Matthews, son of Hall of Famer Bruce Matthews.

Here is a rundown of the new additions to the roster.

Linebacker Akil Blount – Blount, the son of Steelers' Hall of Famer Mel Blount, signed with the Miami Dolphins as a undrafted rookie free agent in 2016. Blount, who went to Florida A&M, was released late in training camp, and didn't play last season.   

Linebacker Jason Fanaika – Fanaika signed with the San Francisco 49ers as an undrafted rookie free agent in 2016. Fanaika, who played at Utah, was released during training camp and signed to the Oakland Raiders practice squad. The Raiders released him, and he was signed to the Washington Redskins practice squad.

Offensive lineman Kyle Friend – Friend, who played at Temple, was originally signed by the New York Jets as an undrafted rookie free agent in 2016 and spent time on their practice squad.

Cornerback Devonte Johnson – Johnson, who played at Weber State, signed with the Atlanta Falcons as an undrafted rookie free agent in 2016, but was released before the start of the season.  

Offensive lineman Mike Matthews – Matthews, who is the son of Hall of Fame offensive lineman Bruce Matthews, signed with the Cleveland Browns as an undrafted rookie free agent in 2016. Matthews, who played at Texas A&M, was waived prior to the start of the regular season.

Running back Trey Williams – Williams came into the NFL as an undrafted rookie free agent with the Washington Redskins in 2015. Williams, who played at Texas A&M, also spent time with the Dallas Cowboys, New England Patriots, Miami Dolphins and Indianapolis Colts.
