What Went Right, What Went Wrong

What went right, wrong vs. Jets

COIN TOSS: Steelers call tails. It's tails. Steelers win the toss and defer. The Jets will get the football first

1:11 p.m. – What Went Wrong: The Jets took the opening kickoff at the 25-yard line following a touchback, and they drove the length of the field to take a 7-0 lead on a 23-yard touchdown pass from Sam Darnold to Vyncint Smith, who caught the ball between Joe Haden and Terrell Edmunds . Le'Veon Bell accounted for 32 of the yards rushing and receiving, and he also converted a fourth-and-1 with a 7-yard run. Another key play was a 14-yard pass interference penalty on Minkah Fitzpatrick that converted a third-and-3. The Jets had a 7-0 lead with 10:27 left in the first quarter.

1:21 p.m. – What Went Wrong: With their first offensive possession, the Steelers did something they could not afford to do. They turned the ball over, with Devlin Hodges intercepted by LB Tarell Basham while trying to convert a third-and-10 from the Jets 45-yard line. The pass was intended for Vance McDonald over the middle.

1:31 p.m. – What Went Wrong: The Steelers second offensive possession ended with a three-and-out. Benny Snell gained 1 yard on first down, and then Devlin Hodges was sacked on second down. His third down pass completion was not enough for the first down, and following Jordan Berry's punt, and the return by Vyncint Smith, the Jets took over at their 41-yard line with 1:52 left in the first quarter.

1:39 p.m. – What Went Wrong: Sam Ficken's 54-yard field goal with 14:15 left in the second quarter extended the Jets lead to 10-0. The seven-play drive covered 23 yards, and it yielded just a field goal when Cam Heyward stopped Le'Veon Bell for no gain on a third-and-2 from the Pittsburgh 36-yard line.

1:47 p.m. – What Went Wrong: Devlin Hodges' second interception came in the end zone by Marcus Maye on a pass intended for Jaylen Samuels. The Steelers had moved from the 25-yard line following a touchback on a kickoff to a third-and-3 from the Jets 19-yard line. On three possessions, the Steelers offense had turned the ball over twice on interceptions and gone three-and-out.

1:59 p.m. – What Went Wrong: On the series following Devlin Hodges' second interception, Coach Mike Tomlin inserted Mason Rudolph into the game at quarterback. Starting at their 14-yard line following a 68-yard punt by Lachlan Edwards, the Steelers converted a third-and-12 with a 13-yard pass from Rudolph to James Washington, but on a third-and-11 Rudolph was forced to scramble and gained only 5 yards. Following Jordan Berry's 31-yard punt, the Jets took over at their 40-yard line with 5:58 left in the first half.

2:06 p.m. – What Went Wrong: During a Jets punt that followed a three-and-out, the Steelers lost about 30 yards on field position when Jordan Dangerfield was flagged for holding on what would have been a nice return by Diontae Johnson. The Steelers started the possession at their 14-yard line.

2:16 p.m. – What Went Right: The Steelers cut their deficit to 10-3 when Chris Boswell made a 49-yard field goal with 1:18 left in the first half to cap a 10-play 55-yard drive. After a 27-yard catch-and-run by Jaylen Samuels, the Steelers had a first down at the Jets 20-yard line. But after an incomplete pass, linebacker Neville Hewitt found a hole on the right side of the Steelers offensive line and sacked Mason Rudolph for a 6-yard loss.

2:25 p.m. – What Went Right: It started with a big play by the defense, a sack-strip-recovery by T.J. Watt that gave the offense the ball at the Jets 41-yard line with 28 seconds left in the first half. A defensive holding penalty on cornerback Arthur Maulet gave the Steelers a first down at the Jets 29-yard line with nine seconds left in the half. Instead of attempting a field goal from there, Mike Tomlin ordered one more play, and Mason Rudolph made it count when he dropped a perfect pass into Diontae Johnson's hands in the end zone after the rookie receiver got behind Bless Austin. That tied the score, 10-10 at halftime.

HALFTIME: Steelers 10, Jets 10

2:54 p.m. – What Went Wrong: The Jets regained the lead, 13-10, on a 37-yard field goal by Sam Ficken that capped a 10-play, 62-yard drive on their opening possession of the second half, which followed a Steelers punt on the opening possession of the second half. The big play for the Jets was a short pass to tight end Trevon Wesco, who turned it into a 32-yard gain to the Steelers 19-yard line. After the field goal, there was 6:30 remaining in the third quarter.

3:12 p.m. – What Went Wrong: After a Jets punt that Diontae Johnson returned for 17 yards to give the ball to the offense at the 42-yard line, the Steelers lost Maurkice Pouncey to a knee injury on a 6-yard run by Benny Snell. On the next play, B.J. Finney, replacing Pouncey, stepped on Mason Rudolph's foot at the snap and the play resulted in a 5-yard loss. After converting with a 14-yard pass to JuJu Smith-Schuster, the Steelers gained only 3 yards on the next three plays and had to put. After the 30-yard punt by Jordan Berry, the Jets started at their 10-yard line.

3:20 p.m. – What Went Wrong: The Jets were in punt formation from their 15-yard line when an unidentified Steelers player was flagged for a neutral zone violation that gave the Jets a first down.

3:29 p.m. – What Went Wrong: When the Steelers got the ball back after a three-and-out, Devlin Hodges was back in the game because Mason Rudolph was out with an injury to his left shoulder. Hodges hit a 15-yard pass to Diontae Johnson, but then he was sacked for a 9-yard loss by Quinnen Williams when Benny Snell appeared to miss an assignment in the backfield, and then on third down B.J. Finney's shotgun snap was low and wide, which resulted in another loss of 8 yards. Jordan Berry's 24-yard punt had the Jets starting at their 21-yard line.

3:37 p.m. – What Went Wrong: The Jets extended their lead to 16-10 with a 42-yard field goal by Sam Ficken with 3:11 left in the fourth quarter. Sam Darnold completed 34 yards worth of

passes on the first two plays of the possession, and then Le'Veon Bell converted a third-and-5 with a 7-yard run.

3:49 p.m. – What Went Right: The Steelers went three-and-out on the possession following the field goal, and then the Steelers defense forced the Jets into a three-and-out to get the ball back for the offense at the Pittsburgh 40-yard line with 1:27 remaining.

3:54 p.m. – What Went Wrong: The Steelers last gasp was unsuccessful when Devlin Hodges threw incomplete to James Washington on third down in the end zone, and then to JuJu Smith-Schuster on fourth down.

FINAL SCORE: Jets 16, Steelers 10
