Game theme: The NFL has partnered with the American Cancer Society for the 18th consecutive season for 'Crucial Catch,' and the Steelers will be taking part in it today when they host the Indianapolis Colts at Acrisure Stadium.
The initiative is designed to bring attention to the importance of early detection and risk reduction, things that can be life saving for individuals who are diagnosed early.
Since the inception of the partnership, the NFL has contributed more than $38 to the American Cancer Society's work to improve cancer screening in under-resourced communities through the sale of Crucial Catch branded merchandise, NFL Auction items, and general fundraising.. Those efforts have helped reach more than 2.7 million people with cancer education, patient navigation, screening reminders and resources.
"Crucial Catch demonstrates what is possible when the NFL, the American Cancer Society, our clubs, players, partners and fans come together around a shared commitment to saving lives," said Anna Isaacson, NFL senior vice president of social responsibility. "For more than 15 seasons, this initiative has helped bring vital cancer education and screening resources to communities across the country. We know early detection can make a meaningful difference, but too many people still face barriers to care. Through Crucial Catch, we are continuing to use the power of football to help close those gaps and make progress toward reducing health disparities."
"The American Cancer Society is working in communities across the country, side by side with local health centers, health systems and partners people know and trust," said Shane Jacobson, chief executive officer of the American Cancer Society. "Through Crucial Catch, the NFL is helping expand that work so more people can access trusted screening support close to home. That local collaboration is what makes this initiative real, and it is how we continue improving cancer outcomes for more people."
Steelers players and coaches will be supporting the cause when they wear Crucial Catch sideline gear, including hats, hoodies and t-shirts, during the game. The items are available to be purchased on Steelers.com, with a portion of the proceeds going to the American Cancer Society.
A crucial catch: It doesn't stop there by a longshot for the team.
In support of the NFL's Crucial Catch mission to fight cancer through early detection and risk reduction, all fans entering the stadium will receive a themed Terrible TowelÂź sponsored by UPMC Hillman Cancer Center and UPMC Magee-Womens.
There will be no shortage of support throughout Acrisure Stadium with on-field stencils and goal posts wraps being among the featured items supporting Crucial Catch. Players and coaches will also show their support, from the sideline apparel, which will also include pins, gloves, wristbands, sideline caps and other items.
The Steelers will also use their digital and social platforms to share the importance of the initiative.
The community spotlight of the game is A Glimmer of Hope Foundation. The foundation's guiding principle is: what's raised here stays here. They are committed to keeping every dollar we raise right here in our community to support women who need it most. Through community partnerships and grassroots fundraising, A Glimmer of Hope has donated over $7 million to support groundbreaking studies, patient programs, and advanced diagnostic technologies. A Glimmer of Hope focuses on ensuring that womenâespecially those diagnosed at a young ageâhave access to the same life-saving care and research opportunities regardless of circumstance.
The Ford Warriors in Pink Quilt will be presented by Joey Thurby, Chairman of the Neighborhood Ford Store, and Dan Wind, owner and president of Washington Ford, to UPMC.
UPMC cancer survivors will stand on the field for the National Anthem.
Honoring America: The National Anthem will be performed by country music star Alexis Wilkins.
Halftime Fun: The University of Pittsburgh Marching Band will perform at halftime.
Honoring a Hero: The U.S. Steel Salute to Heroes recipient is Captain Gary Emmett Campbell, United States Army. He served in Vietnam in the Army Chemical Corps. In his many roles, he was recognized as a true leader of men. When faced with severe obstacles, limited resources, and under enemy fire, he would find a way and accomplish his mission. He was a pioneer, leading a new technology that forever changed how the military would engage on the battlefield saving countless American lives while putting his own at risk. His dedication to his soldiers drove him to go above and beyond the call of duty, earning him the Bronze Star and many other commendations. The extensive time he spent on the battlefield, led to his exposure to Agent Orange which has brought him to a new battle against Parkinson's Disease.
