Steelers lose to Jets, 16-10

The Steelers went to New York looking for a win to stay in control in the playoff hunt and left not only with a 16-10 loss, but with multiple injuries, including an injury to quarterback Mason Rudolph.

"It's put up or shut up time and we didn't get the job done today," said Coach Mike Tomlin.

Rudolph came into the game in the second quarter after Devlin Hodges threw two interceptions in the first half. Rudolph helped the Steelers tie the game, 10-10, with a touchdown pass to Diontae Johnson. Rudolph was hot, completing 14 of 20 passes for 129 yards, but suffered a shoulder injury and was sidelined for the remainder of the game.

Hodges wasn't able to pull out the win for the black and gold, throwing a Hail Mary on the second to the last play to James Washington that Marcus Maye broke up in the end zone.

Maurkice Pouncey also left the game with a knee injury, and didn't return, and James Conner went out early with a quad injury he wasn't able to return from.

The Jets pulled out the 16-10 win on Sam Ficken's second field goal of the game, coming in the fourth quarter.

The Jets regained the lead at 13-10 on a 37-yard field goal by kicker Sam Ficken with 6:30 left in the third quarter.

The big play on the 10-play, 62-yard drive in 5:09 was a 32-yard completion from quarterback Sam Darnold to tight end Trevon Wesco to the Steelers' 19-yard line. Wesco was uncovered and caught Darnold's pass in the right flat before lumbering down the sideline.

The Steelers struck for 10 point in the first half's final two minutes.

A 49-yard field goal by kicker Chris Boswell capped a 10-play, 55-yard drive in 2:24 and brought the visitors to within 10-3 with 1:18 left in the second quarter.

Outside linebacker T.J. Watt got the ball back for the Steelers' offense with a sack of Darnold, a strip, and a fumble recovery at the Jets' 41 with 28 seconds left before halftime.

Rudolph made the Jets pay for the turnover with a 29-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Diontae Johnson with four seconds left in the quarter. Boswell's extra point sent the teams to their locker rooms at halftime tied at 10-10.

Hodges had been replaced at quarterback after throwing his second interception of the game with 10:21 left in the second and the Steelers trailing, 10-0. Hodges tried to hit running back Jaylen Samuels in the end zone on third-and-3 from the Jets' 19 but was picked off by safety Marcus Maye.

Rudolph's first series produced a 13-yard reception by wide receiver James Washington on third-and-12 from the Steelers' 12, but fizzled thereafter.

The Jets took the lead on a game-opening, 11-play, 75-yard drive in 4:33 that culminated in a 23-yard touchdown pass from Darnold to wide receiver Robbie Anderson. Ficken's extra point gave the Jets a 7-0 lead with 10:27 left in the first quarter.

Jets running back Le'Veon Bell carried five times for 33 yards and caught one pass for a loss of 1 on the march.

Hodges' first interception ended the Steelers' first possession. Defensive tackle Tarrell Basham dropped into coverage and took away a pass intended for tight end Vance McDonald at the Jets' 34 with 5:45 left in the first.

The Jets increased their lead to 10-0 on a 54-yard field goal by Ficken with 10:54 left in the second.

The Steelers lost running back James Conner for the day due to a thigh injury sustained in the first half.
