Por primera vez en 13 años, los Steelers decidieron seleccionar a un corredor en la primera ronda del Draft al elegir a la estrella de Alabama Najee Harris con el pick 24 durante esta noche en Cleveland.
El objetivo de los Steelers es que el jugador del Roll Tide ayude a mejorar a la peor ofensiva terrestre de la NFL en 2020. "Tiene una buena combinación de tamaño, fuerza y atletismo. Nos gusta su visión para encontrar huecos y también es un corredor completo que puede ayudar en el juego aéreo", fueron las palabras del Coach Mike Tomlin sobre Najee Harris.
Para muchos expertos Harris era el mejor talento disponible en la posición de corredor y su producción en Alabama fue espectacular, sobre todo la temporada anterior. Fue responsable de 30 anotaciones (26 por tierra y cuatro por recepción) en tan sólo 13 juegos y es un corredor que puede tener entre 20 y 30 acarreos por juego sin ningún problema.
¿Cuáles son las fortalezas de Harris?
Físicamente es un corredor imponente. En cuanto más veo a Harris más me recuerda a una versión mucho más imponente de Le'Veon Bell, tanto por su paciencia para encontrar huecos en las defensivas rivales y atacarlos de forma eficiente, como por su capacidad de ayudar en el juego aéreo en diferentes rutas de pase, incluso alineándose ocasionalmente como receptor interno.
Pero también tiene atributos físicos que me recuerdan a Derrick Henry, capaz de romper tackleadas y castigar a los rivales. De hecho rompió el récord que tenía el ahora corredor de los Titans de más yardas en Alabama, con 3,843, además de acumular 57 anotaciones durante toda su carrera.
¿En qué puede mejorar este prospecto?
Creo que le falta un poco de explosividad y aunque es rápido, sólo dos de sus 638 acarreos fueron para 40 o más yardas. Es un corredor más de poder que de velocidad y también necesita pulir un poco su técnica para bloquear a los defensivos en protección de pase, pero es titular indiscutible desde el primer día.
¿Cuál es mi opinión al respecto?
El pick de Najee Harris es bastante sólido y tiene el potencial de convertirse en una estrella de la NFL en un par de años. Lo que me preocupa es que los Steelers aún tienen una enorme cantidad de necesidades en la línea ofensiva, la cual suele ser clave para que los corredores den el siguiente paso.
Aún falta ver qué hará el equipo durante el resto del Draft, pero creo que la prioridad de los Steelers sigue siendo garantizar no sólo una línea que pueda ayudar a mejorar el peor juego terrestre de la liga, sino también a proteger a Ben Roethlisberger y darle tiempo de encontrar a sus receptores en pases de más de 5-7 yardas.
De nuevo, su molde encaja perfecto en la mentalidad de los Steelers, un corredor fuerte, de poder y capaz de encontrar la zona de anotación, algo de lo que Pittsburgh ha carecido en los últimos años.
