On December 4, 2017, Ryan Shazier was brought to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center in an ambulance, directly from Paul Brown Stadium where he suffered a spinal injury that had him in the thoughts and prayers of the entire NFL family.
On Saturday, with the Steelers back in Cincinnati to play the Bengals on Sunday afternoon, Shazier returned to UCMC, this time proudly walking in the front door to visit with and say thank you to the doctors and staff that treated him during that tough time.
"There were so many white jackets. It was crazy," Shazier shared of what it was like when he first arrived at the hospital. "I was just there and there were so many people around me. I am just truly thankful to everybody."
Shazier visited along with the UPMC doctors who treated him, Dr. David Okonkwo and Dr. Joseph Maroon, another step in his healing and recovery.
"Thank you guys so much for everything," Shazier told the staff. "I am glad to be here. I wanted to let you guys know I am doing really well and am thankful."
