Overcoming challenges: The Steelers started the 2025 season off defeating the New York Jets, 34-32, at MetLife Stadium in a game that was filled with energy and excitement and came down to the wire.
"Wow, that was fun and challenging at the same time," said Coach Mike Tomlin. "The NFL season is back. Sixty minutes of football."
Kicker Chris Boswell sealed the win when he nailed a 60-yard field goal with 1:03 to play in the game.
"I can't say enough about Boz," said Tomlin. "Our kicker is a serial killer and he's he got a low pulse rate. He can't wait to deliver."
Boswell isn't the only one who delivered. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers, facing his former team in the Jets, completed 22 of 30 passes for 244 yads and four touchdowns in his first game in a Steelers uniform.
"I just thought he was game all day," said Tomlin. "But again, you guys asked me last week why was I confident? That's why I was confident. That's what I've been looking at in preparation. And I'm appreciative of it. Not only his efforts, but the efforts of the collective."
Rodgers is one of multiple newcomers to the Steelers who had an impact on the game. Others included cornerback Jalen Ramsey, who broke-up a pass on fourth down to close out the game, receiver DK Metcalf, who had two receptions for 54 yards, and running back Kenneth Gainwell, who forced a fumble on special teams that eventually led to a Steelers touchdown.
"I'm excited about the new Steelers, whether they're new to the league or new to us," said Tomlin. "We got a lot of plays from a lot a new Steelers today. They're earning their place in Steelers lore with their efforts. We talked a little bit about that last night. I don't care about what means you get here, you play one for this organization, you're a Steeler.
"And so, a lot of guys etched their names into that legacy with their efforts in play today. Can't say enough about Kenny G(ainwell), that offensive player making a tackle on kickoff and knocking that ball loose, I think (Ben) Skowronek recovered.
"It's just an example of making plays in all three phases and being a football player first and a positional player second."
While the Steelers walked away with the win, Tomlin definitely sees some areas he wants them to work on heading into the home opener against the Seattle Seahawks next week.
"I tip my cap to the New York Jets," said Tomlin. "They were a worthy opponent. They fought. They really put us up against the challenges in a lot of ways.
"It's unknown sometimes when you're playing a new staff. I thought that we exposed in some of those spaces at times, but I thought the coaches did a real good job of communication, the players did a really good job of communicating and adjusting. We made about one or two more plays than they did. And sometimes these games are decided by that.
"I'm excited about the next week's process. We got an opportunity to get a lot better between week one and week two. We're going to need to, obviously. Our slip was showing a little bit today in some areas. We weren't good enough in the running game, particularly the RPO running game. We didn't put enough pressure on Justin (Fields).
"On the offensive side of the ball, I thoughts some negative plays killed drives. We didn't protect our quarterback well enough on play pass. Trying to go for chunks on first and second down, they sacked us a couple of times in those instances, that put us behind the chains. You can't be behind the change in a hostile environment in a close football game. Usually, those bills come due.
"Those are some of the things that you know you talk about or you feel immediately after but, certainly we'll comb through this and work to get better. That's a part of the process, that cycle of prepare, play, evaluate, and make necessary corrections and play again. And so I'm excited about looking at the video and dissecting it, the things that we need to improve upon and going to work next week with this group."
Rodgers delivered: Quarterback Aaron Rodgers threw for four touchdown passes in his return to MetLife Stadium, leading the Steelers to a win over the Jets.
Rodgers said he wasn't trying to prove himself to anyone, including the Jets who released him in March, allowing him to become a free agent.
"I just want to have fun today," said Rodgers. "I was dreaming about the opportunity to step back on the field in the offseason and wondering how it would feel and would the juices flow and would it hit my competitive spirit. There were a lot of moments that I was on the sideline just to myself, thanking my wife and my friends for encouraging me to take time on my decision and that this would be the right decision. So happy to be a Steeler and happy things went the way they did."
Rodgers said beating the Jets wasn't much different than any other win, and did indicate that the Steelers game against the Green Bay Packers, where he played for 18 seasons, is the one that will have different emotions for him.
"I love beating everybody. So, it doesn't matter who it is," said Rodgers. "I really only played 18 games here. So, I was actually talking to Breece (Hall) about that pregame. He said, how's it feel? I said, honestly, I was here for two years, but it doesn't come close to how it's going to feel playing Green Bay because that was 18 years of my career.
"So, it was nice to win, especially, hearing some of the cat calls out there and the boo birds. I'm not sensitive about that. I expected that. I kind of like that, but there were probably people in the (Jets) organization who didn't think I could play anymore, so it was nice to remind those people that I still can play."
It was a game of ups and downs and emotions, but in the end, it was the Steelers who would persevere, something Rodgers said they are built for.
"That's what you're supposed to do. You're an NFL player," said Rodgers. "Mike (Tomlin) talks about the standard of play and the way you're supposed to handle adversity. We had a tough training camp, physical training camp. Practicing midday in the heat.
"I expect our guys to be mentally tough in those situations."
Rodgers, who didn't play at all in the preseason, had no problem building an in-game chemistry with all of his weapons, something that was generated in the offseason when a group of them met up in California to work together, but more importantly get to know each other.
That showed with completions not just to players like DK Metcalf and Pat Freiermuth, but also Ben Skowronek, who scored the first touchdown of the game, and even got some ribbing from his quarterback.
"I don't think it hurt the little trip that Freiermuth put together to come out and see me out West," said Rodgers. "Ben was annoying the heck out of me all camp, trying to beg me to go to a custard spot almost every single day. But Ben is a glue guy for our team. You know he does the dirty work, and I couldn't believe coming off that fake he was wide open. I was throwing a ball thinking man, Ben's going to score the first touchdown. And then I went to the locker room and saw the worst thing that can happen to Ben, that's a crowd full of reporters around him to get his head even bigger than it already is. But, I really like Ben and proud of that play he made today."

Persevering at the end: The Steelers defense wanted to come out of the gate and shut down the Jets, in particular their ground game.
But the Jets had 182 yards rushing, something that didn't sit well with linebacker Alex Highsmith.
"We finished the game the way we wanted to, making two big stops on those last couple of drives," said Highsmith. "But obviously, that's not the standard for our defense. We got punched in the mouth to come out of the gate. That's not the standard for us.
"We just got to get back in the lab. We've got to digest this film. We've got to play more physical from the jump.
"We got the W. It obviously wasn't good enough from our part. We've just got to get back in the lab and watch film and digest this film and get back."
When the game was on the line, the defense stepped up huge. On the Jets final drive, linebacker Patrick Queen pressured quarterback Justin Fields, forcing a third down incompletion. On fourth down, cornerback Jalen Ramsey broke up a pass to Garrett Wilson, shutting down the Jets and giving the offense the ball back to go into victory formation.
"I just think in a big-time, players making big-time plays," said Highsmith. "PQ (Queen) had a big pressure on that last drive. And then Jalen making that play on that last pass was awesome.
"So, it just showed perseverance from us. We just kept fighting, kept clawing. But obviously, we shouldn't have put ourselves in that position by playing the way we did. We just have to get back and get right for this home game."
