Week 6 Injury Report (Chargers)

The hottest topic this week at the UMPC Rooney Sports Complex has been the status of quarterback Mason Rudolph, and after being limited for the third consecutive day he has been ruled out for Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Chargers.

Rudolph suffered a concussion against the Baltimore Ravens last week and while he practiced in a limited basis, he was in the NFL’s concussion protocol throughout the week.

With Rudolph out, Devlin Hodges will get the call, making his first NFL start on a huge stage, with a national television audience. From what his teammates have seen of the young signal caller so far, they aren’t concerned that the stage will be too big for him.

“It’s a pretty big stat to have as a quarterback, confidence, composure and just managing the game,” said David DeCastro. “He knows the game of football, you can tell that. He enjoys it. He is just playing backyard out there, slinging it around but under composure.

“He is real light. He doesn’t take it too seriously, but at the same time he takes it seriously if that makes sense. He is laid back, but at the same time he is locked in.”

The team also activated Paxton Lynch from the practice squad on Friday.

Jaylen Samuels (knee), James Washington (shoulder), Mark Barron (hamstring) and Roosevelt Nix (knee) all missed practice this week and have been ruled out for the game as well. Samuels, Washington and Barron were all injured last week against the Ravens, while Nix’s injury has been nagging him since the season opener.

With Samuels on the sideline, Benny Snell is being called upon to step up this week. Trey Edmunds was also activated from the practice squad.

Snell has been a standout on special teams so far and wants to take it to the next level. James Conner has been in his ear all season and Snell knows it’s time to put what his mentor has taught him to work.

“He has taught me it’s always about the details and the little things that you do that matter the most, that make the biggest impact,” said Snell. “Every day is a new learning experience, whether it’s on or off the field. It’s fun. It’s the game I love. I come in and do what I love.”

Anthony Chickillo was a full participant again on Friday, something he relished after being inactive the last three weeks with a foot injury, and he isn’t on the status report.

“It’s always fun to be out there with the guys,” said Chickillo. “It’s hard. Injuries are part of our game, and when it happens you don’t wish it on anybody. I am excited to get back to practice, back to playing.

“It was tough missing time. I love playing a lot. I love this game. This game has given me everything and I enjoy it.”

Vance McDonald was also back on the field on Friday, practicing for the first time this week and he was a full participant.

“You really value those reps, especially this week with Duck,” said McDonald. “It was to fly around today. My legs are fresh.”

Steve Nelson (groin) was limited again on Friday and he was been ruled out for Sunday. Mike Hilton, who was limited on Thursday with a foot injury, was a full participant on Friday.
