Steelers drop home opener to Seahawks, 31-17

The Seattle Seahawks outscored the Steelers 17-3 in the fourth quarter en route to a 31-17 win at Acrisure Stadium.

"Certainly a disappointing home opener," said Coach Mike Tomlin. "There's a lot of things that we can do better in all phases and in coaching and we will."

The Steelers led 14-7 at the half, but the visitors were able to even the score early in the third quarter through a 10-play, 80-yard touchdown scoring drive and seized the lead for good with a 55-yard field goal by kicker Jason Myers with 12:46 left in the quarter.

On the ensuing kickoff, the ball got past rookie Kaleb Johnson and landed in the endzone. Seattle's George Holani pounced on the ball for a touchdown, giving the Seahawks a 24-14 lead with 12:46 remaining.

"Poor judgement by a young player," said Tomlin after the game.

For three-plus quarters, the game was a tight struggle. The Seahawks opened the scoring with a 21-yard touchdown pass from Sam Darnold to Tory Horton to cap the game's opening drive.

The Steelers answered with a 48-yard Chris Boswell field goal to cut the deficit to 7-3. A pair of third-down conversions aided the drive, the first on a defensive hold and the other a 9-yard draw by Jaylen Warren. An incompletion on third-and-2 brought out Boswell for his first of three field goals on the day.

On the next play, Jalen Ramsey stepped in front of Cooper Kupp to intercept Darnold at the Seattle 44. The Steelers gained another 14 yards and Boswell kicked his second 48-yarder to cut the deficit to 7-6 with 2:13 left in the first quarter.

Myers had a chance to match Boswell's field goal, but his 36-yard attempt hit the left upright and fell away with 12:05 left in the second quarter, the Seahawks still leading by a point.

The Steelers took the lead on a sequence that led to Aaron Rodgers tying Brett Favre for fourth place on the all-time career touchdown pass list with a 2-yard throw to D.K. Metcalf. It was Rodgers' 508th career touchdown pass.

The scoring sequence began with Seattle facing a fourth-and-1 at the Pittsburgh 29. Linebacker Payton Wilson became ill on the field, and, with Patrick Queen already out, the Steelers called a timeout. Upon resumption of play, Darnold faked a handoff and turned to throw, but Cameron Heyward batted the pass that was plucked out of the air by Nick Herbig. He returned the interception to the Seattle 21 to set up the Metcalf touchdown against his former team.

Metcalf boxed out Seahawks safety Coby Bryant for the score. The Steelers added a two-point conversion on a Rodgers pass to Darnell Washington with 1:09 left in the first half to put the Steelers ahead at the half, 14-7.

The Seahawks opened the second half the same way they did the first, with a touchdown. After the Steelers had punted, the Seahawks drove 80 yards on 9 plays to tie the score. The drive was capped with Darnold's 7-yard touchdown pass to tight end A.J. Barner. The extra point tied the score 14-14 with 6:10 left in the third quarter.

One play later, a 65-yard catch and run by Jaylen Warren gave the Steelers a first down at the Seattle 5. However, Rodgers was intercepted by Derion Kendrick in the end zone on a deflected third-and-goal pass from the 4.

The Seahawks took a 17-14 lead early in the fourth quarter with a 54-yard field goal by Myers with 12:46 to play in regulation.

The Seahawks added to the lead with the bizarre TD on the kickoff.

The Steelers answered with a 45-yard field goal by Boswell to cut the deficit to 24-17 with 7:49 remaining. The successful kick was Boswell's fifth in five tries this season, all of which have been 45 yards or longer.

The Seahawks closed the scoring with a 19-yard touchdown run by Kenneth Walker on a third-and-goal play.
