Training Camp Report: Aug. 1 - A Friday night to remember

LATROBE, Pa. _ "Friday Night Lights" lived up to the hype.

"He was asking me today what to expect and all that," tight end Pat Freiermuth reported regarding a conversation with quarterback Aaron Rodgers prior to the Steelers' annual foray into Memorial Stadium. "I was like, 'Dude, it's literally like going to play for a state championship at a high school.' He was like 'alright, cool.' And then he came and he was like, 'this is awesome.'

"He loved it. It was just great to be a part of that. I'm sure he appreciated it being later in his career, just kind of experiencing that. I think he's been loving it so far."

The announced crowd was 13,653.

There were long lines of people still trying to gain access to the stadium at 7:30 p.m. (the autograph session had been scheduled to begin at 6:45).

"Everyone has a lot of high expectations for us, and we do as well," Freiermuth said. "We have a lot of big-time players on our team, and I think everyone's excited to see how, obviously, with Aaron coming in and (wide receiver) DK (Metcalf) and (cornerback) Jalen (Ramsey) and (tight end) Jonnu (Smith), just seeing how we're all clicking together.

"We got a lot of exciting things on the team right now and a lot exciting times ahead. We're looking forward to that. I think the fans feel that, as well."

Two-Minute Fizzles

The offense went 0-for-2 during the first two-minute drills of training camp.

The task was to advance the ball 53 yards for a touchdown with 1:39 on the clock and one timeout with which to work.

The first-team group, led by Rodgers, failed to generate a first down.

The second-team offense had its possession ended on an interception in the end zone by cornerback James Pierre.

"Obviously, we didn't execute how we wanted to," Freiermuth said. "We gotta continue to build on that. It was our first two-minute (drill) all of camp. Obviously, we wish it ended differently but we're working towards the end goal of Week One (of the regular season) and being able to execute then.

"There's going to be some ups and downs, we'll get it corrected. We've always been pretty good at two-minute."

Not on this night.

Rodgers had two of his first three attempts batted down at the line of scrimmage (by outside linebacker Alex Highsmith and by outside linebacker Nick Herbig).

In between, Rodgers failed to connect with Freiermuth.

On fourth-and-10, Rodgers had Metcalf running down the left sideline but the ball glanced off Metcalf's hands.

Pierre's interception occurred on a fade from quarterback Mason Rudolph to wide receiver Lance McCutcheon on second-and-10 from the 11-yard line with :10 seconds left int he exercise.

Observations

-Broderick Jones lined up at left offensive tackle for the first snap of "Seven Shots" (the defense won the drill, 4-3.

-Dylan Cook handled the majority of left tackle reps and Spencer Anderson continued to replace Isaac Seumalo at left guard.

-The fourth rep of "Seven Shots" resulted in a pass from Rudolph to wide receiver Scotty Miller that was ruled incomplete by the five NFL officials working practice. Head coach Mike Tomlin had questions about the call.

-Cornerback Joey Porter Jr. didn't practice (Tomlin said Porter is day-to-day). With Porter not participating, Ramsey played outside cornerback opposite Darius Slay.

-Round Two of "Backs-on-'Backers" included tight end Darnell Washington getting the best of outside linebacker T.J. Watt again. Washington also won two reps against defensive end DeMarvin Leal and one against rookie outside linebacker Jack Sawyer. Washington celebrated the last two victories by waving a finger ("no, no, no").

-Rookie running back Kaleb Johnson was noticeably better than he had been in the first edition of "Backs-on'Backers." After Johnson stopped inside linebacker Mark Robinson a scuffle broke out. But when the drill ended it was all high-fives and hugs.

-The offense had a better go of it in "Team Run" this time but the defense still managed two tackles for a loss (inside linebacker Cole Holcomb and linebacker Eku Leota).
