Before they start catching passes from Russell Wilson and the other Steelers quarterbacks at training camp at Saint Vincent College next month, tight end Connor Heyward and wide receiver Calvin Austin III spent time catching passes from aspiring American Football players in Ireland and Northern Ireland this weekend.
The Steelers made the trip across the Atlantic to host a pair of American Football Youth Camps over the weekend. They travelled the length of the island and held the free camps for approximately 200 young Irish athletes between the ages of 9 and 18 - the first at Deremore Park in Belfast on Saturday and then at MTU Stadium in Cork on Sunday.
Heyward and Austin made the trip along with Steelers Director of Business Development & Strategy, Dan Rooney. The Steelers were joined in the on-field festivities by coaches from American Football Ireland.
"We have hosted numerous events across the island of Ireland, and we continue to be blown away by the love that exists for the game of American Football and the appetite of young people to learn the game," Rooney said. "We received a warm welcome in both Belfast and Cork and I hope everyone involved in our two youth camps enjoyed learning some of the skills and techniques of the game from our players, Connor and Calvin. We are already looking forward to future opportunities where we can engage with our many Irish fans and grow the game that we love."
The Steelers held an American football youth camp for local youth in Belfast, Northern Ireland at Deramore Park with current Steelers Calvin Austin III and Connor Heyward and Steelers Director of Business Development & Strategy Dan Rooney.
"Being able to teach them the passion I have for the sport I love and grew up playing is very impactful, and I just learned a lot myself from teaching them, looking at their passion and how happy they get," said Austin.
The Pittsburgh Steelers Youth Camps are part of a list of activities the organization have hosted on the island of Ireland since being granted rights to expand their marketing and activities for the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland as part of the NFL's Global Markets Program.
The NFL's Global Markets Program grants NFL clubs access to international markets to expand and raise further awareness of the game through activities such as fan and youth events, along with corporate sponsorship and merchandise sales. The Steelers have previously hosted fan and football educational events, including a first-of-its-kind, sold-out Fan Watch Party at Croke Park in Dublin last November and a Kicking Clinic in April of this year. The team also announced the selection of their fourth-round pick in this year live from Co Kerry.

The Steelers have brought several former players to Ireland as part of their activity over the last 12 months. This was, however, the first time the team has sent current players to the island of Ireland since being granted marketing rights through the Global Markets Program there in 2023.
The Steelers have dedicated social media accounts that have provided content from the weekend's Youth Camps that are provided for Irish fans to enjoy.
"It's so cool to see and watch the sport grow," said Heyward. "The kids care about it a lot and are big fans of the Steelers. Being able to come out here and give back means the world to me and Calvin."
