Sutton: 'I am really calm about the game'

LATROBE, Pa - The more you can do.

Those words reverberated from late Steelers Coach Chuck Noll in the 1970s and they are words that today's players still take to heart.

"You have to be versatile," said Cameron Sutton. "I always said from a defensive back perspective never limit yourself to one position. That keeps you on your toes and guys around you on their toes. The more you can do, the better you are as a player.

"Being able to acclimate and be comfortable in all positions is a key. Make plays on the ball and have fun. I will be all over. Nickle, dime, corner. It's all over right now."

And Sutton is feeling comfortable doing it all, especially after getting off to a slow start last year after spending the first 12 weeks of the season on injured reserve.

"I am real comfortable," said Sutton. "It's all about slowing the game down. Understanding what to do out there on the field. From there it's just playing football. The game doesn't change. The people and the scheme change, but the mental part is always going to be the same. It's how you approach it. I am really calm about the game. That helps me."

Being calm in a game where the adrenaline is constantly flowing, where it's nothing but a physical battle, seems like the impossible. But Sutton has mastered it.

"The physical nature is always going to be a part of it, just being calm and composed out there on the field," said Sutton "There is a lot that happens throughout the course of a game. You can't be rattled by the things that don't go your way, the things that go your way. At the end of the day it's about being calm, having patience, letting the flow of the game come to you and capitalizing and making the most of the opportunity you have.

"It's just an approach. It's a mentality. It something that comes throughout the course of games. All of the work you put in during the week, we replayed those scenes and plays that you could possibly get. When you get those opportunities you make the most of them. That calm manner you have on the field to where you are just zoning out. You understand what is going on around you. You are on top of your game and you are ready to do it at all times."

He said it:

"I have never played a season without him, so I need him around." – Maurkice Pouncey on Ramon Foster

"If you don't like competition you are in the wrong game. You can't get frustrated. Sometimes you are doing to have good plays, sometimes bad plays, you have to keep moving on." – Tyler Matakevich
