Nix, Switzer placed on IR

The Steelers placed fullback Roosevelt Nix on the Reserve/Injured list ahead of tonight's game against the Cleveland Browns. Nix was already ruled out of the game with a knee injury. Nix was injured in the season opener against the Patriots, missing the next five games. He played against the Dolphins and Colts, but was injured again and missed the Rams game.

The team also placed receiver Ryan Switzer on the Reserve/Injured list. Switzer suffered a back injury last week against the Rams, leaving the game early. He didn't practice at all this week and was previously ruled out for tonight's game.

The team in turn promoted receiver Tevin Jones from the practice squad to the 53-man roster and signed linebacker Jayrone Elliott.

Jones signed a reserve/futures contract with the Steelers during the offseason. He was on the Steelers practice squad during the 2018 season. Jones entered the NFL as an undrafted rookie free agent with the Houston Texans in 2016. He was released by the Texans before the season started but added to their practice squad late in the season. He was signed to a reserve/future contract in Jan. 2017 but waived that spring. He was then signed by the Kansas City Chiefs that summer but was released prior to the start of the season.

Jones played in 51 career games while at the University of Memphis, starting 27, and had 90 receptions for 1,215 yards and nine touchdowns. He was also a special teams standout.

Elliott originally signed with the Steelers on Aug. 22 and was released when the team cut down to the 53-man roster. He was signed to the 53-man roster on Sept. 10, but released on Oct. 11 when the team signed Paxton Lynch and Trey Edmunds to the active roster. He was brought back on Oct. 23, but released on Oct. 31.

Elliott played in three regular season games this season, recording one tackle and two special teams tackles. In the preseason Elliott recorded six tackles, one sack and a fumble recovery that he returned 88 yards for a touchdown against the Carolina Panthers. In his four seasons in the NFL he has played in 42 games with the Green Bay Packers (2014-16) and Dallas Cowboys (2017).

Elliott played college ball at Toledo where he saw action in 47 games. He had 124 tackles, 22.5 tackles for a loss and 16 sacks.
