Hit the ground running

LATROBE – On his first pass attempt vs. defensive players on the opening day of training camp practices Thursday here at Saint Vincent College, Aaron Rodgers had his pass stepped in front of and intercepted by linebacker Patrick Queen.

Rodgers' reaction to the interception in an un-padded practice?

"It's good to get that out of the way," Rodgers said. "Anyone who's watched me practice over the years, you know I like to try certain throws at certain times. And anybody who has watched me during games knows I've been pretty stellar taking care of the football."

Rodgers has thrown just 1.4 percent of his career passes for interceptions, the best NFL history. He has thrown 117 in his career.

"It's going to be a challenge for me throwing in the heat every single day," Rodgers said. "It's going to be a good challenge for me every single day. I'm going to throw some picks, but I'm going to throw some touchdowns, too."

That's one reason the Steelers were so high on adding Rodgers this offseason – the touchdowns. Rodgers, 41, signed with the Steelers just a couple of days before minicamp began in June, following his release by the Jets in March. He threw 28 TD passes last season and has 503 in his career.

Head coach Mike Tomlin isn't exactly looking to take it easy on his new QB.

"He's a workaholic," Tomlin said. "I don't have a whole lot or reservations about that. He has hardened himself over the course of his career with his attitude toward work."

And Rodgers has high expectations for himself and his new teammates.

"I think most of the 32 teams would probably say something to that accord," Rodgers said of Super Bowl aspirations. "But I really think there's really only six to eight that really have a legitimate chance. Sometimes, it's 10 to 12. There are teams that surprise you. I would say, on paper, we're probably one of those 10."

Coming off back-to-back 10-7 seasons that have ended in Wildcard playoff losses, the Steelers are looking for that spark from the QB position.

They also like the veteran leadership he is providing.

To that point, Rodgers is helping some new teammates deal with life living in a dorm again.

Rodgers spent many years with the Packers riding bicycles to nearby St. Norbert's College. He couldn't ride a bike to Saint Vincent, but he does appreciate the atmosphere.

"I have DK (Metcalf) as my suite mate," Rodgers said. "I love, love, love this idea, this opportunity to be here in Latrobe and to stay here and connect with the guys."
