Despite a senior year at Southaven H.S. (Miss.) that saw him record 29 receptions for 406 yards, rush for 906 yards, and score 16 TDs (rushing, receiving and returning), Echols was a zero-star recruit and enrolled at Northwest Mississippi C.C. as a wide receiver before the coaching staff convinced him to play cornerback
