Abe Munayer is in his first season as the Steelers' assistant strength and conditioning coach in 2026. Previously, he was the head of athletic performance for Olympic sports with football performance support at San Jose State University (SJSU). He joined the Spartans in April 2021 after spending four years as the director of strength and sonditioning at the City College of San Francisco.
While at SJSU, Munayer's primary responsibilities were oversight of athletic performance for all Olympic sports and assistance with football operations. He led daily strength, speed, movement preparation, and return-to-play processes in collaboration with sport coaches, sports medicine, and nutrition staffs. Munayer oversaw pre-practice and pre-game warm-ups, recovery protocols, and workload management strategies while leveraging sports science tools to inform training decisions and reduce injury risk. Munayer also contributed to staff development, facility operations, and the design of the new weight room facility as well as enhancement of the football performance training facility to optimize athlete readiness and performance.
During his time with CCSF, Munayer also directed all strength and conditioning weight room set up, equipment, and pre and post-training nutrition. He was tasked with implementing and designing all of the football training camp and in-season practice schedule, and was in charge of moderating the volume and intensity for all practices leading up to game day competition. Munayer was the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach for the Rams' football program as well as being in charge of implementing program design for all Olympic sports.
In 2021, Munayer completed a strength and conditioning fellowship with the Green Bay Packers during the team's organized team activities (OTA's). In the course of the fellowship, he helped facilitate and train the athletes with their off-season strength and conditioning program. He also helped lead the pre-lift warm-up stations, assisted in the implementation and designation of conditioning, and helped organize and prepare the facilities for each training session.
Prior to his time at CCSF, Munayer spent two seasons at Stanford University as the Cardinal's assistant football sports performance coach. In the role, he was responsible with assisting the sports performance staff in the day-to-day duties surrounding the football program. Before his time at Stanford, Munayer spent three seasons on staff as assistant strength and conditioning coach at the University of California, Berkeley. During his time with the Golden Bears, he helped the team to win the 2016 Armed Forces Bowl Championship and helped the development of No. 1 overall 2016 Draft pick, Jared Goff.
Prior to his stop at Cal, Munayer worked with the Cleveland Browns during their 2014 training camp, earning the Bill Walsh Minority Coaching Fellowship for his efforts while assisting the strength and conditioning staff.
Among his many qualifications, he is both a certified strength and conditioning specialist (NSCA) and strength and conditioning coach certified (CSCCa).
In 2015, Munayer published a journal article as a co-author from research data to the Journal of Strength & Conditioning Research: "Barbell Deadlift Training Increases the Rate of Torque Development and Vertical Jump Performance in Novices."
Munayer interned at Stanford in 2014, when he assisted the football and wrestling programs. He also was a graduate assistant at Texas Tech. He assisted the Red Raiders football program to the 2013 Holiday Bowl Championship.
Munayer earned his bachelor's degree in kinesiology from Sonoma State in 2012, and his master's degree in exercise and sport science from Texas Tech in 2013.
