Week 1: Steelers vs. Falcons
Mark's first illustration for the Pittsburgh Steelers was as rookie illustrator commissioned for the 1990 Yearbook cover. Check your archives for the cover with Noll, Woodson, Lipps, Anderson and Brister. 36 years later, this is his 6th collaboration with the Pittsburgh Steelers and Commonwealth Press on a Gameday poster. Past posters include the Franco Harris Immaculate Reception 50th Anniversary poster, the Home Opener in 2023 and last year's Hall of Honor inductees (Roethlisberger, Pouncey and Porter). The Gameday project has become a feather in the cap to any illustrator and a dream commission for a lifelong Steeler fan. Mark's illustration vocabulary pulls from vintage advertising of the 20's and 30's, WPA and propaganda posters, all giving contemporary concepts a timeless motif. A college educator in Pittsburgh for 26 years, Mark is an Associate Professor in Graphic Design at Chatham University, Shadyside.
Mark's artwork has been internationally recognized by Communication Arts Magazine, 3X3 Magazine, Archive 200 Best Illustrators Worldwide, Graphis, Applied Arts Magazine, Creative Quarterly, the Los Angeles Society of Illustrators and the New York Society of Illustrators. Mark is a member of the American Institute of Graphic Artists, a founding member of the Pittsburgh Society of Illustrators and three of Mark's works are in the permanent collection of the Society of Illustrators Museum in New York.
