Memorable Moments: Steelers at Ravens

The Steelers have a long history of memorable moments throughout the years, and during the 2025 season we are going to highlight those moments against each week's opponent.

This week, we feature the Baltimore Ravens on the road.j

The Steelers clinched the AFC North in 2008 in a place where the battle for the division is always a bitter one, Baltimore.

"We fought all the way through, and it's great to win here in Baltimore," said receiver Hines Ward following the game. "It's great to be the division champions after the tough schedule that we've played and the way we've had to battle to win games all season."

The Ravens took an early lead on a Matt Stover field goal, and the Steelers answered when kicker Jeff Reed hit one of his own.

For almost four whole quarters neither team would reach the end zone, with Stover and Reed accounting for all scoring and Baltimore leading, 9-6.

But receiver Santonio Holmes came through in the end, catching a four-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Ben Roethlisberger with a mere 43 seconds left in the game.

Holmes caught the ball in the end zone, but it appeared the ball didn't cross the goal line, so he was ruled down at the one-yard line.

"I thought I got the ball in the end zone," said Holmes. "I caught it out in front of me but then I brought it into a tuck position. In my mind, that meant the ball was in the end zone."

After an official review, it was ruled a touchdown.

Another key AFC North game, and another great performance by Troy Polamalu. Polamalu was named the AFC Defensive Player of the Week for his performance against the Baltimore Ravens in a 13-10 win.

Polamalu came up big for the Steelers when he sacked Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco, stripping the ball free. Linebacker LaMarr Woodley recovered and returned it to the nine-yard line with 3:13 on the clock and the Steelers trailing, 10-6.

The offense took advantage when quarterback Ben Roethlisberger hit running back Isaac Redman for a nine-yard touchdown.

"Troy's a great player," said Coach Mike Tomlin. "A lot of guys would go in there and sack the quarterback. He sees the game a little differently, that's what makes him special. He got the ball out, unfortunately, we weren't able to get the ball in the end zone, but our offense finished the job for us."

Polamalu finished the game with five tackles, a sack, forced fumble, and two quarterback hurries.

"That's what Troy does," said running back Rashard Mendenhall. "He always comes through with great plays at the right time. The defense was playing hard and tough all day. We came with pressure, and it was a matter of time before we got a turnover, and we did. We were able to get the ball and we had to put points on the board at that point."

In what has become commonplace in the Steelers-Ravens rivalry, this game was another low-scoring contest with both defenses doing their part to keep the other team out of the end zone as much as possible.

Kicker Chris Boswell got the Steelers on the board first with a 28-yard field goal, but it didn't take long for the Ravens to tie the game, 3-3.

Ravens running back Latavius Murray, who had 16 carries for 150 yards, gave the Ravens a lead with a 46-yard touchdown run. Boswell cut the lead to 10-6 with a 40-yard field goal, before the Steelers took a 13-10 lead when quarterback Ben Roethlisberger hit receiver Chase Claypool for a six-yard touchdown and 13-10 lead.

The Ravens wouldn't go away, though, tying the game, 13-13 with 1:41 to play.

"For whatever reason, it didn't feel like, 'Okay, this is it,'" said Roethlisberger. "And no point did I think, 'This is it, it's almost over.'"

The game went into overtime, and Roethlisberger directed a 15-play, 65-yard drive in 4:28, which included a 10-yard completion to receiver Ray-Ray McCloud on fourth-and-8 from the Ravens' 41-yard line with 2:27 left in overtime. Boswell sealed the win with a 36-yard field goal with 1:56 left in overtime that helped the Steelers secure a playoff spot with a little bit of help.

"That's Steelers-Ravens, I can't say enough about the men in that locker room. Their collective will was on display," said Coach Mike Tomlin. "It was on display throughout a hostile environment today. Obviously, dire circumstances and so forth. A lot of competition in the stadium. Distractions, potentially on the outside. They were able to process all of that and make the necessary plays to secure a victory.

"I'm just appreciative of it, particularly some of those young ones. The growth and development of these young guys throughout this journey and the negativity that's usually associated with growth and development did not take away from their efforts. They smiled in the face of it, and I'm just appreciative of that. And, obviously, I'm appreciative of our quarterback—QB 1 (Ben Roethlisberger). He's been smiling in the face of adversity for 18 years. So, even though it's not surprising, it's still appreciated."

With a paid attendance of 4,345 due to restrictions from the Covid-19 pandemic, the Steelers were able to outlast the Ravens and come away with a 28-24 win.

The Steelers jumped out to a 7-0 lead when linebacker Robert Spillane intercepted Lamar Jackson and returned it 33 yards for a touchdown.

The Ravens scored 17 unanswered points, to take a 17-7 lead into halftime.

The Steelers came out on fire in the second half, with quarterback Ben Roethlisberger hitting tight end Eric Ebron for an 18-yard touchdown and running back James Conner taking it in from the one-yard line for a 21-17 lead.

In the fourth quarter, the Ravens went back on top when Jackson connected with Marquise Brown to re-take the lead, 24-21. The Steelers wouldn't be denied, though, and Roethlisberger found Chase Claypool for an eight-yard scoring strike and 28-24 victory.

While the offense didn't put up magical numbers, managing just 48 yards rushing to the Ravens 265 yards rushing, and had several turnovers, it was an opportunistic defense that had two interceptions and recovered two fumbles, including one by Jackson deep in Steelers territory on a potential scoring drive. Jackson fumbled late in the fourth quarter on fourth-and-three from the Steelers eight-yard line, and safety Minkah Fitzpatrick sealed the win with his recovery.
"I am going to tell you what I told my team. We did not play well today," said Coach Mike Tomlin. "We lacked detail in a lot of areas. When you play good people, you are going to be up against it when you don't play good. We can't allow the emotions of the moment for us to miss that fact.

"I am proud of these guys. I am proud of the fight. I am proud of how they supported one another. But it is important that we don't lie to ourselves. We did not function well in a lot of ways today. Baltimore had a lot to do with that. I give them credit, particularly in the early stages of the game. They utilized their bye week well. They threw some things at us that we had to adjust to. I thought we were able to get some things settled down at the half and kind of get back into things. Like I always say, it is good to do that with a win. But, just much respect to Baltimore, they bring the best out in us. This rivalry is what it is. Hopefully it was entertaining to football fans worldwide."
