Steelers receive compensatory draft pick

The Steelers were awarded a sixth-round compensatory pick for the 2016 NFL Draft.

The selection will be the 220th overall, the 45th pick in the sixth round.

Among those selected by the Steelers with a compensatory pick were wide receiver Hines Ward, linebacker Mike Vrabel, running back Amos Zereoue, guard Willie Colon and cornerback William Gay.

The NFL awarded a total of 33 compensatory picks to 13 teams. Under the rules for compensatory draft selections, a team losing more or better compensatory free agents than it acquires in the previous year is eligible to receive compensatory draft picks. Compensatory free agents are determined by a formula based on salary, playing time and postseason honors.

The Steelers only loss was cornerback Brice McCain and they had no gains under the compensatory pick guidelines.

Compensatory picks can't be traded and are awarded in rounds three through six, and added on to the end of each round.

The following is a complete list of the 2016 compensatory picks.
