Steelers re-sign Greg Warren

Greg Warren was set to become an unrestricted free agent in March, but as in the past when this time of year has rolled around, he had no interest in going anywhere.

And as in the past, he won't be.

Warren signed a one-year deal to return to the Steelers in 2017, and the long snapper has once again avoided having to dip his toes into free agency.

"First off, I certainly appreciate the Steelers wanting me back," said Warren.  "And second, I appreciate them taking the uncertainty out of where I stand with the team in the future and letting me know I am in the plans for next season. Coach (Mike Tomlin) said he appreciates what I have done, was happy with the performance and would like to continue the relationship. That's all I need to hear in order for me to know they appreciate what I do and I want to come back.

"This is home. It's the only place I want to play. When my time comes for me to retire like players before me, I am grateful for the time I have had and it will end here. With that being said, I hope it doesn't end any time soon and I continue to play for this wonderful organization for a while."

Warren, who will be headed into his 13th season, originally signed with the Steelers as an undrafted free agent in 2005. He has been a picture of consistency for the team, starting all 16 games last year for the seventh consecutive season. Warren has played in a total of 181 regular-season games, the second-most among an active Steelers' player.

He also has played in 15 postseason games, and knows that next year's team has the talent to extend that number.

"It's exciting. Every year we have a lot of talent," said Warren. "We have great coaches to bring that talent along. Together we always have a chance to win our division and put our sights on winning the Lombardi Trophy. We are excited to go into next year, like every year, with high expectations."

Warren said he will take a little time off, but before he knows it, it will be back to preparing for next season.

"Right now is like a decompression period for me," said Warren. "I take a month to be with family and get away from it. At the same time you are gearing yourself up for the 2017 season. Whenever we get back to working out, it's full speed ahead. You can't rely on what you did last year to get you anywhere the following year."
