Feiler signs contract extension

Matt Feiler is looking forward to continuing to learn from Mike Munchak.

The Steelers signed Matt Feiler to a one-year contract extension, getting it done before free agency when he would have become an exclusive rights free agent.

“It’s good to get it done,” said Feiler. “Any time you can get it taken care of, it’s a good thing.”

Feiler played in five game in 2017, including starting the Steelers Week 17 game against the Cleveland Browns at right guard, his first NFL start.

“It was cool. Just getting the first start under you belt, it’s a milestone in my career,” said Feiler. “It’s something to look back on and grow off of. It was a good experience.

“And any time you can get some playing time and experience on the field, it’s good. I feel like I learned a lot of things already. I learned technique things, when and when not to do things against certain opponents. I am hoping for more opportunities and learn from them.”

One thing he will continue to take advantage of in the learning process is an offensive line room loaded with talent, and the guidance and leadership of line coach Mike Munchak.

“There is so much experience in that room,” said Feiler. “There are so many talented players. Any input they have, you have to take it and run with it. Coach Munchak, he played the game, he is in the Hall of Fame. Any time you can learn from a guy like that it helps you that much more.”

Feiler, who played at Bloomsburg University, was on the Steelers practice squad in 2015 and part of 2016, as well as the active roster in 2016.

He is the fourth player who was set to become an exclusive rights free agent that the team signed to an extension this offseason. The team previously signed Kameron Canaday, Xavier Grimble and Mike Hilton to one-year extensions.
