When the NFL Owners Meetings begin on Monday there will be a laundry list of topics that will be discussed and voted on. Steelers President Art Rooney II gave a preview of what will be on the agenda, including improving officiating as well as playoff expansion.
There are a few other items that will be on the docket as well, including the following.
Game day rosters: There is a proposal by the NFL Competition Committee increase the number of active list players for regular season games played on a day other than Sunday or Monday from 46 to 49, excluding opening weekend.
Raising the goalpost: Another proposal is to extend the goal posts an additional five feet about the cross bar, from 30 to 35 feet.
“I don’t have a strong position on that one way or the other,” said Rooney. “I am not sure I see a great need for it but I am not necessarily all that worried about it either.”
Kicking it off: The NFL moved kickoffs from the 30-yard line to the 35-yard line several years ago and now the proposal is to move it to the 40-yard line. The reason is for player safety, creating more touchbacks and fewer collisions on kickoff returns.
“I think I am satisfied with where it is now,” said Rooney. “It has worked. As I understand it, one of the impacts was to reduce the number of concussions. We have reduced the number of players that’s happened to, so I am not sure that we need to change it.”
