Tomlin: 'We need to add depth in that area'

Posted Mar 28, 2014

Steelers Coach Mike Tomlin talks running backs, compensatory picks and more.

Ringing his Bell: Le’Veon Bell is the only experienced running back on the Steelers roster right now, but don’t think he will be doing it all himself this season. Mike Tomlin was recently asked if Bell is capable of carrying the ball 300 times this season, something ‘old-school’ running backs did.

“I am not going to speculate but obviously he is capable of that,” said Tomlin. “I think maybe he carried the ball 350 times his last year at Michigan State. He is a talented guy. Obviously we need to add depth in that area, and we will in the not too distant future, whether it’s in free agency or in the draft.”

Getting their pick: The Steelers were awarded three compensatory picks for the 2014 NFL Draft, all based on their losses and gains in free agency from last year.

The Steelers will receive a third-round pick, the 33rd in the round and the 97th pick overall in the draft; a fifth-round pick, the 33rd in the round and the 173rd pick overall; and a sixth-round pick, the 39th in the round and the 215th pick overall.

“I was expecting it, but at the same time it’s like Christmas,” said Tomlin. “It’s great. Particularly this time of year when you’re out evaluating talent, you feel real good about having the opportunity to add three more potential guys that could be significant. That’s the way we’re approaching it.”

Bringing position flexibility: The Steelers added linebacker Arthur Moats, a free agent from the Buffalo Bills who can play either inside or outside linebacker, something that Tomlin likes.

“He’s got position flexibility,” said Tomlin. “He’s a guy that was an edge rusher in college. He’s a guy that has proven in Buffalo that he is capable of playing off the ball. He is going to be a guy that is going to be able to do multiple things for us. We are excited about having him.

“I think (his position) it’s something that we should sort out along the way. He has proven to be capable at both. We are going to see what is best for us.”

He likes Ike: Ike Taylor’s decision to take a pay cut and remain with the Steelers didn’t just hit home with the fans, it hit home with Tomlin as well.

“We’re excited about retaining him, moving forward with him and having the significant years of his career be in Pittsburgh,” said Tomlin. “I love and respect Ike Taylor, more importantly than as a player, but as a man.”
