Steelers to host football camps in Mexico

Posted Mar 22, 2014

The Steelers will return to Mexico City in April for an adult and youth football camp.

The Steelers have a huge fan base in Mexico, and once again members of the organization will return to Mexico City to host two football camps, one for adults and one for youth.

The 2014 Steelers Football Camps in Mexico, presented by Pepsi, will take place on April 5-6 and will be the third time in the last five years the team has hosted a camp in Mexico. The instructional camp for adults will be held at Unidad Cuauhtémoc on Saturday, April 5, while the youth instructional camp will be held on Sunday, April 6.

“It’s great that we have so many fans in Mexico,” said Steelers President Art Rooney II. “We wish we could get back there and play a game some time soon. We have many fans that come from Mexico for games and visits to Pittsburgh. It’s very special to be able to go back down there and have some of our players visit the camp and allows people in Mexico to get a little more up close and experience Steelers’ football in a special way.”

The fan camp will include individual drills directed by Steelers’ players, introducing them to different intricacies to help them further understand the game and give kids the basic knowledge to play the game. Among the current and former players expected to take part in this year’s camps are Cortez Allen, Kelvin Beachum, Willie Parker, Maurkice Pouncey, Markus Wheaton, Craig Wolfley and Jason Worilds.

“I think this is hugely important,” said Wolfley, who took part in the fan camp in 2012. “Fans want to have some sort of touch with those they are supporting. For the Steelers to take the time to reach out and present some of the players they can interact with, it’s great if you want to have good relationships with the fans.

“I was overwhelmed by the support there. The overwhelming response of the warm, loving, kind and considerate Mexican people was amazing.”
