Steelers’ players are accustomed to being active and on Tuesday they made sure students at Allegheny Traditional Academy Middle School understand the importance of exercise as well.
“Growing up we were raised to get outside and exercise,” said Heyward. “It’s beneficial not just for athletes, but for everyone. It keeps kids healthy and is a good way to have some fun.
“We love our video games too, but you have to have a healthy diet and be active as well. It’s about maintaining the balance and knowing that there has to be a time to get out and play.”
Allegheny Traditional Academy Middle School won a contest as a part of the NFL’s Back to Football campaign to have the Steelers visit, as well as a $10,000 grant from the team to be used for health and wellness programming or equipment.
But the highlight for the kids was definitely the opportunity to go through exercises with the players.
“It’s a great way to keep kids active,” said Johnson. “With the way things are going with kid’s eating habits, it’s important for them to get 60 minutes of activity whether they are playing football, basketball or any sport. Just getting those 60 minutes of activity a day is a key.
“Having the balance between eating healthy and being outside is huge. You can’t be on the couch all day playing video games. Going out 60 minutes each and every day is great.”
