Rookie minicamp roster is announced

Posted May 11, 2017

The Steelers will hold rookie minicamp at the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex.

Beginning on Friday approximately 50 players, all who are either rookies or select first-year players, will take part in the Steelers three-day rookie minicamp.

It will be the first chance for the coaches to see the team’s eight draft picks in action, as well as the nine rookie free agents the team signed after the draft.

The team can also invite any rookie who went undrafted and hasn’t signed with a team to take part on a tryout basis.

Some things to keep an eye on:

- There will be some local college flavor on display, including six players from the University of Pittsburgh, third-round draft pick James Conner, as well as tight end Scott Orndoff and safety Terrish Webb, who were both signed as rookie free agents after the draft. Three other Pitt players, kicker Chris Blewitt, linebacker Matt Galambos, and safety Reggie Mitchell, were invited to take part on a tryout basis.

- Other players with local college ties include West Virginia running back Rushel Shell, who is from Hopewell, Pa., and defensive end Christian Brown, also from WVU; as well as Indiana University of Pa. guard Ethan Cooper, all rookie free agents the team signed after the draft.

- There will be three quarterbacks participating, fourth-round draft pick Joshua Dobbs from Tennessee, undrafted rookie free agent Nick Schuessler from Clemson, and Dillon Buechel, who is from McKees Rocks, Pa., and played at Duquesne University and will be there on a tryout basis.

- The following players with local connections will take part on a tryout basis: safety Aaron Terry and tight end Paul Butler, who attended California University of Pa.; wide receiver Corey Jones, a Pittsburgh native who attended Toledo; linebacker T.J. Neal, a McKeesport, Pa. native who played at Auburn; running back Wayne Capers, who is from Pittsburgh and played at Duquesne University; and offensive tackle Dylan Colucci, who is from Latrobe, Pa. and played at Youngstown State.

- For two players taking part it’s a Steelers’ family affair. Linebacker Akil Blount, a first-year player who was signed this offseason, is the son of Hall of Fame cornerback Mel Blount. Kevin Hart, a wide receiver from Coach Mike Tomlin’s alma mater William & Mary, is the son of Steelers’ Vice President Mark Hart, and scouts saw him when he took part in Pitt’s Pro Day at the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex. He has been invited to take part on a tryout basis.
